The increasing exposure of the level of censorship and control on centralised platforms like Facebook and YouTube

has definitely created a noticeable purge, and a transition to alternative platforms in recent months.

 

One of these platforms is Steemit, a social media platform that awards users in cryptocurrency.

 

 

 

Steemit is a social network that looks and functions a lot like Reddit, but with one HUGE difference:

 

Steemit pays both the content creators when their work gets upvoted, as well as the people who curate the best content on the site by upvoting others work.

 

In some ways, Steemit is similar to other digital currencies.

For example, Steemit currency units can be traded, bought, and sold on the open market just like all of the other digital currencies.

 

With other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, the actual currency units that are created each day are distributed to the people who run a special bitcoin software program on their computers that perform a process called Bitcoin Mining. The amount of computing power you have dictates how much money you get.

 

Steemit allows for currency mining as well, but it’s not the primary way to earn money. Every day, new Steemit currency units

are created by the network and distributed to the people who engage with the site. The more you engage, the more you get.

 

People who create content are rewarded for their content. People who upvote content are rewarded for helping to curate the best content available on the site. Commenters who add to the discussions are paid too.

 

 

 

It is an amazing way of getting paid for the things you are passionate about, without having to build up a huge following on the huge conglomerate sites. It's still in beta, with around 50,000 active daily users. So it's still pretty new, and now is a great time to start, simply, the more you participate, the more opportunity there is for awards.

 

The upvoting system rewards other people based on the amount of influence or "Steem power" you have,

each account is in a hierarchy of one of three categories - minnows, dolphins and whales.

 

Some accounts votes will be worth hundreds of dollars, which means if your content gets spotted by an influential account,

you get a large payout, and loads of attention.

 

The native currency is STEEM, which can be used to trade for Steem Power for more influence, or Steem Dollars, which can be exchanged for any other crypto or fiat currency.

 

 

On Facebook and YouTube, people are getting shadowbanned left and right for posts that have been on there for years, and they're making so much money from people. Selling all your data to advertisers and 3rd party companies. Steemit resolves this, by giving the creators and curators some of the website's revenue.

 

It really is social media v2.0. Go and sign up, it takes a couple of weeks before your account is approved.

But I assure you it's worthwhile, if you don't you'll be kicking yourself this time next year.
